Gympie residents and farmers are counting the cost of a severe storm which hit the region yesterday afternoon.
The storm brought hail, up to 10 centimetres in diameter, and strong winds with homes, cars and crops damaged.
Nine calls were made to the SES in an hour.
Gympie Mayor, Glen Hartwig, says some locals have only just had their roofs and cars repaired from a hail storm in 2019.
He says where possible people should use local repairers.
Meanwhile, a Gympie squash farmer has had his entire crop wiped out.
At Mick Sims’ Jones Hill farm, eight tonnes of squash is a write off at a cost of 240-thousand dollars.
He’s not covered by insurance.
His house and other infrastructure on the farm is also damaged but it’s insured.
It costs five thousand dollars a hectare to replant and he says there’ll be a shortage in the supermarkets for Christmas.
The weather bureau’s senior meteorologist, Miriam Bradbury, said the large hail fell from Maryborough to Noosa.
