It’s taken a marathon 2.5 hours to rescue a man following a serious fall in the Glass House Mountains.
Emergency crews were called to Mt Tibrogargan shortly after 1pm on Tuesday, after a man in his 50s reportedly fell up to 20 metres down a rock face.
He was unconscious when bystanders reached him.
QAS operations supervisor Shaun Bright says it took some time for paramedics to reach the patient.
“Quite a walk into scene, it was about 500 metres until we got to Chicken Rock on Mt Tibrogargan, so quite a bit of a steep climb in.”
“The gentleman had significant head injuries, he had an open probably skull fracture and also lower limb injuries,” Mr Bright says.
The rescue helicopter was called in, and the man was winched aboard, before being flown to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a critical condition.
It follows another rescue at Mt Ngungun at the weekend, after a woman in her teens also suffered serious injuries in a fall.
The incidents have led to a warning from paramedics, for only experienced and well-prepared mountain climbers to tackle the Glass House Mountains.
“In the busy school holiday periods [rescues] are becoming more and more common
“We do just recommend, obviously, if you’re not experienced just don’t go up the mountain at all,” Mr Bright says.
