We all know him as Jon Snow, the brooding hero of Westeros who, famously, knew nothing. But it turns out that for the first eleven years of his life, actor Kit Harington mirrored his most famous character in the most literal way possible. He had absolutely no idea what his own legal name was.
The London-born actor has been known to the public as Kit since he first burst onto our screens, but that signature moniker is actually a nickname. The reality of his identity only came to light during a completely ordinary day at school, leading to a rather bizarre moment of realization.
The Exam Room Identity Crisis
Born in west London in 1986, Harington grew up in a household where he was exclusively addressed as Kit. Because his family used the name from day one, he simply assumed it was the name written on his birth certificate.
The illusion came crashing down when he was eleven years old, sitting in a classroom to take a standard school placement exam. When Harington wrote “Kit Harington” at the top of his test paper, the invigilators stopped him.
As Harington later recalled, the school staff looked at him with utter confusion before informing him that he was actually registered as Christopher Catesby Harington. For an eleven-year-old, discovering that your parents had essentially omitted your official first name for over a decade caused a minor existential crisis.
Why He Refuses to Be a “Chris”
Despite the schoolroom revelation, the actor chose not to embrace his inner Christopher. He has openly stated that the official name only makes an appearance when he is filling out official government paperwork or applying for a passport. To the rest of the world, and in his own mind, he remains Kit, noting that he simply does not feel like a “Chris.”
Life After the Seven Kingdoms
When Game of Thrones concluded, Harington was in a position where he never strictly needed to work again, having commanded standard-setting salaries of up to $1.1 million per episode during the final seasons. Yet, his career choices since the finale have focused entirely on creative substance over massive paycheques.
For a long time, rumors swirled regarding a highly anticipated Jon Snow spin-off series. While fans held out hope for a return to the North, Harington eventually confirmed that the project was officially off the table. The creative team simply could not find a narrative worth telling, and rather than participating in a hollow cash-grab, Harington chose to walk away.
Instead, he has quietly assembled an incredibly diverse and sophisticated body of work. He returned to his theatrical roots with demanding stage roles in London’s West End, including Henry V and the contemporary Slave Play. He also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Eternals, though that franchise’s future remains somewhat up in the air.
Most recently, he has won over critics with his performance in the corporate drama Industry, playing an ambitious but flawed aristocrat. It is a role far removed from swords and dragons, proving that even if he did not know his name until age eleven, he certainly knows exactly who he wants to be now.
