There will be an extra 147 homes available for social housing on the Sunshine Coast, Gympie and Moreton Bay within the next year.

The State Government and community housing provider Coast 2 Bay are building 26 new units at Yandina and will buy a further 121 homes in the region.

Most of the homes are coming out of the National Rental Affordability Scheme (NRAS) and will add to the stock of accommodation for social and affordable housing.

The homes secured will be a mix of detached houses, townhouses and apartments.

The first 24 homes are already under contract and tenants will now be able to continue in these homes through the partnership between the State Government and Coast2Bay.

Most of the homes were part of the soon to be closed NRAS, an Australian Government initiative which offers affordable rental homes to eligible households and which will cease in 2026.

The Housing Minister, Meaghan Scanlon, visited a property in Yandina yesterday where builders are constructing a complex of 23 one-bedroom and three two-bedroom apartments.

The government has contributed $9.78 million to the Yandina project which will be completed in October and provides homes for Queenslanders on the social housing register.

Minister Scanlan said “Every week, we’re adding more social and affordable homes through new builds, purchases, and re-purposing.

Coast 2 Bay CEO, Andrew Elvin, said around two thirds of the homes will be on the Sunshine Coast, about 25% in Moreton Bay and 5% in Gympie.

He said the homes in Gympie will be for people still suffering from last year’s floods who are eligible for social hosing.
