A Sunshine Coast childcare centre will remain closed for the rest of the week while police investigate a horrifying incident there.
Five staff members and six children locked themselves in a room after a 28 year-old man started smashing a glass door to get into the Peregian Springs childcare centre around 6pm on Monday.
The man was self harming with a sharp implement and was treated by police after they took him into custody but he died at the scene.
It’s understood the students didn’t see the man taking his own life.
The man wasn’t known to staff or children at the centre.
Acting Inspector Scott Wiggins praised staff for their quick thinking during the incident and said it was a confronting scene for everyone.
The Education Minister said counselling will be provided for anyone who needs it.
The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the incident on behalf of the State Coroner.
