In what experts have labelled the “race of the century”, Pallister finished less than a second behind Katie Ledecky of the US in the 800 metre freestyle on Saturday.

Pallister took almost five seconds off her personal best and is just the third woman in history to swim under 8 minutes, 10 seconds for the distance.

In other results last night….the coast’s Sam Short finished fourth in 1500m freestyle while Isaac Cooper came seventh in the 50 backstroke.
