More than 400 displaced Ukrainians have spent a day at Australia Zoo to give them a brief respite from thinking about the war in their homeland.

The group enjoyed a full day of adventure, from feeding kangaroos and exploring Australia Zoo’s grounds, to watching the world-famous Wildlife Warriors show in the 5000-seat Crocoseum.

The Ukrainian Ambassador to Australia, Vasyl Myroshnychenko, said “it’s a great pleasure to be here at Australia Zoo on this beautiful day in Queensland”.

“We’re honoured to have brought in 400 displaced Ukrainian people and the warm welcome extended to everyone has been wonderful,” he said.

“Australia Zoo has offered families, especially those with little kids, a chance to relax, engage with wildlife, and reconnect with nature.

“We’re very grateful for such a meaningful experience,” he said.

The day offered guests a welcome escape and an opportunity to connect with the natural world, surrounded by Australia Zoo’s iconic animals, from tigers and koalas to saltwater crocodiles.

Peter Bongiorni, President of the Ukrainian Community of Queensland, said, “we’re here at Australia Zoo, the best zoo in the world, and it means so much to have a day where people can simply be one with nature and the animals”.

“It’s a chance to let go of their worries and enjoy a truly healing experience,” he said.

“This was our second visit, and we had twice as many people join us this time.

“We’re incredibly thankful to the Irwin family and Australia Zoo for opening their doors and sharing the true hospitality of Australia,” he said.
