Australia’s best dragon boat racers have been on the Sunshine Coast fine tuning their preparations for next month’s world championships in Thailand.
The Australian premier division men’s, women’s and mixed teams spent the weekend at Lake Kawana.
Australia’s head coach David Abel says it’ll be difficult for the Auroras to win a medal.
“I would like to see us somewhere around 5th or 6th in the world.
“We come up behind China, Thailand, Canada at the world stage they’re very, very strong. Obviously it’s the Chinese national sport. They’re the big power team.
And it won’t bother Mr Abel where the Australian teams finish as long as they try their hardest.
“This is a sport where there are 22 people on a boat,” Mr Abel said.
“There is a sweep at the back who steers the boat, there is a drummer on the front who keeps timing and there are 20 athletes paddling in between.
“Those 20 have to do everything at the same time. If they do not the boat will not run well and I don’t know another sport where 20 people have to do the same thing exactly at the same time.
