Until recent years capturing smooth, professional-looking memories on the fly has always required a choice between a heavy camera rig or a compromising mobile screen.

That is exactly the problem the new Insta360 Luna Ultra aims to solve. Released globally, this pocket-sized gadget wants to redefine how we capture our daily lives. By shrinking professional-grade hardware into a device that sits comfortably in your palm, it promises to bridge the gap between casual holiday snaps and actual full blown cinematic filmmaking.

Why Does the Luna Ultra Exist?

The handheld gimbal camera market is not entirely new, but it has long felt ripe for a shake-up. For years, creators looking for buttery-smooth video without the bulk of a mirrorless setup turned to basic action cameras or early-generation pocket gimbals. However, those devices often forced a compromise on image quality, especially when the sun went down.

Insta360 has spent the last six years collaborating with the optical legends at Leica. This partnership has yielded impressive results in the action camera space, but the Luna Ultra marks their first venture into a dedicated, stabilised handheld camera system. Unveiled at Leica’s historic headquarters in Germany, the Luna Ultra exists because both companies realised creators want premium glass and effortless stability without needing a backpack full of gear. It is designed for the modern lifestyle, built for people who want to document their travels, family moments, or daily vlogs with absolute clarity, completely independent of their mobile phone.

The Mechanics: Brilliant Hardware with a Clever Twist

At the core of the Luna Ultra is a dual-lens system that gives you serious photographic versatility. The main camera boasts a massive 1-inch sensor capable of shooting pristine 8K video, while the secondary telephoto lens lets you zoom in up to 12 times without losing the crisp detail of your subject. Because it is co-engineered with Leica, you also get access to iconic built-in color profiles that give your footage a rich, cinematic look right out of the camera.

What it Does Well

  • The Detachable Screen: In a stroke of design smarts that is a true point of difference, the 2-inch OLED touchscreen can pop completely off the handle. It maintains a high-definition wireless connection up to 20 metres away, meaning you can set the camera on a tripod, walk away, and still see exactly what is in frame while controlling the shots. There’s a mic built into it as well so you can use the remote as a microphone making it even more versatile and requiring even less of a setup.
  • Generous On-Board Storage: Unlike many devices that refuse to function without an immediate external card, the Luna Ultra comes equipped with 47GB of usable built-in storage. It is a massive quality-of-life feature for those moments you forget your media case, though you can still expand it up to 1TB via microSD when shooting heavy 8K files.
  • Intelligent Tracking: Powered by a triple AI chip, the tracking software is incredibly sticky. Whether you are chasing a fast-moving pet or framing a group shot, the camera physically pans and tilts to follow the action automatically.
  • Battery and Charging: Getting up to four hours of battery life from a 200-gram device is exceptional. Even better, it charges back up to 80% in just over twenty minutes.

While the hardware is spectacular, premium tech comes with a premium price tag. Starting at AU$1,229.99, it is an investment that casual users might find hard to justify over their existing high-end smartphones. Additionally, while the built-in wind guard does an admirable job with audio, serious creators may still want to invest in external microphones to match the stellar 8K visuals. The Insta360 Mic Pro’s would be the perfect combo here as they link directly to the Luna and allow you to display your company logo on the screen with an e-ink display.

Look and Feel

Holding the Luna Ultra feels like gripping a premium instrument. Available in Cosmic Black and Stellar White, the chassis features a smooth, matte finish that resists fingerprints while providing a secure hold. It feels remarkably lightweight at just over 200 grams, yet the subtle textures and cool-to-the-touch materials give it a reassuring weightiness in the palm. It is tactile, solid, and looks incredibly smart sitting on a table.

How it Stacks Up Against the Competition

The obvious elephant in the room is the DJI Pocket series, which has long dominated this specific footprint and personally completely changed my daily workflow. Where the Luna Ultra attempts to steal the crown is through sheer optical horsepower and intelligence and I’m still not ready to commit either way until I can side by side with the upcoming Pocket 4P which is DJI’s pro model and more in line with the Luna Ultra.

What the INSTA360 Luna Ultra has going for it though is the large 1-inch sensor and a dedicated “PureVideo” mode, turning grainy evening footage into clean, usable memories and of course the detachable screen, which makes solo filming immensely easier compared to fixed-screen competitors. There’s no doubt that what Insta360 has delivered is a formidable alternative that feels distinctly premium.

Spending time with this device changes how you approach capturing your day. There is an undeniable joy in leaving your phone in your pocket, avoiding the distraction of incoming text messages, and letting a dedicated, intelligent lens do the heavy lifting.

The Final Verdict

The Insta360 Luna Ultra is an exceptional piece of engineering that successfully elevates the handheld camera category. It moves the conversation away from sterile technical specifications and focuses heavily on user experience, flexibility, and beautiful colour presentation.

If you are looking for a budget-friendly holiday camera, the price tag might give you pause. But if you value high-end storytelling, effortless stability, and clever design that genuinely changes how you shoot video, the Insta360 Luna Ultra comes highly recommended.
