Pluggers, Thongs, flip flops, jandals, whatever you call them, these humble bits of footwear are an Aussie summer staple. Now, in a twist no one saw coming, IKEA has given them the flat-pack treatment. Yes, you read that right: flat-packed thongs.
As part of its 50th birthday celebrations in Australia, the Swedish furniture giant has launched the world’s first flat-packed flip flops. True to IKEA’s style, the iconic Aussie footwear has been reimagined with the brand’s signature approach to compact design. Like their furniture, the thongs come disassembled, ready for you to put together yourself.

While it might seem quirky (or downright odd), this novelty item is part of a nod to their Australian customers, celebrating opening its first store in the country 50 years ago. Over the years, IKEA has become a household name globally, with research showing 87% of Australians have visited an IKEA store, and many have tackled the joys and occasional frustrations of assembling flat-pack furniture.
And then there are the uniquely IKEA quirks that Aussies have embraced: 33% admit to pocketing the iconic little pencils, to be fair I used to do the same when Pizza Hut had little pencils as well.
If you have a store near you IKEA is doing celebrations nationwide from Saturday 31 May to Sunday 1 June 2025. Alongside the flat-pack thongs, there’s offers like 50% off the POÄNG armchair series and 50-cent hot dogs (thats the price, they aren’t named after the rapper).
