Zoo Asks People to Donate Their Pets As Food

A Danish zoo has caused a stir after publicly asking people to donate their pets to help feed its carnivorous residents. Aalborg Zoo, located in northern Denmark, posted the unusual request on Facebook, explaining that animals such as chickens and rabbits could be accepted as food for predators like lions and tigers.

The zoo clarified that it was not seeking cats or dogs, but rather smaller animals that are commonly kept as pets or livestock. According to the post, the initiative was aimed at providing a natural diet for the zoo’s carnivores while reducing waste. The zoo argued that feeding whole animals is more enriching for predators than processed meat, as it allows them to engage in natural hunting behaviours.

While some locals supported the idea, citing sustainability and animal welfare benefits, others were shocked by the concept of turning beloved pets into meals. Critics questioned whether the request blurred ethical lines, especially for families who might consider donating animals they can no longer care for.

Aalborg Zoo defended its stance, noting that similar practices occur in many European zoos. “We understand this may sound harsh, but it’s a natural part of life for these species,” a spokesperson said. The zoo also emphasised that donations were voluntary and that animals would be handled humanely before being used as food.

The debate has since spread online, with social media users divided between practical acceptance and emotional opposition. For now, Aalborg Zoo continues to stand by its decision, highlighting the importance of providing realistic diets for its carnivorous inhabitants.
