Tas driver evades cops, hides in pine tree

An unlicensed Tasmanian driver has been caught hiding in a pine tree in a farmer's paddock in an audacious attempt to avoid police.

The 26-year-old was one of three dangerous drivers nabbed by police in the state's far northwest on Wednesday.

He failed to pull over for officers in Smithton, but was later found in the tree, police say.

He then failed a roadside drug test and faces several charges including dangerous driving.

Another driver was caught travelling 149km/h, while a motorcyclist was busted travelling 160km/h.

"The three detections are all extremely concerning, particularly relating to the significantly high speeds and blatant disregard of the law," acting inspector Adrian Shadbolt said.
