Girls accused of lighting 13 fires in NSW

Three teenage girls have been accused of lighting more than a dozen fires on the mid-north coast of NSW.

The trio - aged 12, 13 and 14 - were arrested in South Kempsey on Wednesday after information was received from the local community.

Police said they will be dealt with under the Young Offenders Act over 13 fires in the area.

The arrests came a day after more than 60 locals attended a meeting at Kempsey Shire Council following recent fires in the region.

Police said the blazes damaged sections of grass, and no one was injured.

Officers expect to arrest more people as they investigate other fires.

Superintendent Paul Fehon urged anyone with information about suspicious blazes to contact police.

"Deliberately lit fires not only put a strain on emergency services; but can also be life-threatening if they get out of hand," he said in a statement.
