Maleny Dairies cancels tours, festival event over Australia's foot and mouth concerns

Maleny Dairies has pulled out of one of the signature events at The Curated Plate festival and cancelled its dairy tours over the rising risk of a foot and mouth outbreak in Australia.

The culinary food festival’s ‘Celebrating Maleny Dairy Producers’ event has been cancelled as a “proactive precautionary biosecurity measure to protect the health and wellbeing of the cows and calves in our local area”, according to event organisers.

Maleny Cheese and Maleny Food Co were also part of the event.

It’s expected a new date will be announced for the event to take place, outside of The Curated (side) Plate 2022 schedule, but ticketholders have been contacted directly and refunds issued.

Maleny Dairies released a statement on Facebook:

“As you may be aware, Australia is facing the potential risk of a Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak,” the post read.

“The biosecurity and the health and wellbeing of our cows and calves is of the upmost importance and it is for this reason we have decided to indefinitely cancel our dairy tours.

“This also means we have had to cancel this Saturday’s Maleny Dairy Picnic which formed part of the Sunshine Coast’s The Curated Plate culinary festival.”

Sunshine Coast Council division 2 councillor Terry Landsberg says the council respected the decision of the local organisers and appreciated the importance of biosecurity.

“The good news is there are still plenty of locations, activities, menus and price points to suit everyone, and many hidden gems to surprise visitors and locals,” Cr Landsberg says.

“I encourage everyone to taste a bit of the Sunshine Coast and support our local businesses and producers given there are more than 400 food tourism operators on the Sunshine Coast.”

More than 100 events are on offer with only a handful of tickets remaining for popular events across the 10-day festival. Visit
