Officer punched in head while arresting alleged car thief

A police officer has allegedly been punched in the head, while making an arrest in Gympie.

It comes after a vehicle was stolen from outside a Bligh Street a business, at around lunchtime on Friday.

There were several sightings of the vehicle the next day, with police gaining access to CCTV footage.

Officers conducting a patrol along Meadows Lane in Chatsworth later on Saturday, spotted a man believed to be the driver of the stolen vehicle.

They were made aware, a short time later, that the car in question had been located in nearby bushland.

Police informed the man that he was under arrest, when he allegedly ran off towards the stolen vehicle and tried to get in.

The officers gave chase and attempted to arrest the man, when a struggle broke out.

It is alleged the man then punched one of the officers in the head.

A 36-year-old Fishermans Pocket man has since been charged with a string of offences including unlawful use of motor vehicle, serious assault resist arrest, and a number of break and enter offences.

He was due to appear in Gympie Magistrates Court yesterday.
