Council scraps plans to expand Sunrise Shops IGA

The new IGA at Sunrise Beach Shopping Centre won't be as big as first thought.

At the request of the IGA, Noosa Council is scrapping plans to extend the currently vacant, council-owned site, due to the current economic climate.

In October last year, councillors supported a $700,000 plan to expand the 305m2 footprint to 500m2, but have now agreed to revise the lease.

It means any significant capital expenditure has been put on hold until a later date.

Council’s property manager Clint Irwin says the current space will still adequately service the local area.

"In these uncertain times, we agreed that utilising the existing space would be more beneficial for both parties at this moment.

“The IGA tenant is excited about providing a quality, affordable retail offering to local residents and will start work on fitting out the space shortly,” Mr Irwin says.

The tenancy is for 10 years, with a further five-year option.

Mayor Clare Stewart says the lease changes are understandable in these challenging times.

“Given the ongoing uncertainty with COVID and its impact on businesses, I can certainly appreciate the difficulty all business operators are facing."
