Smoke advice as officers conduct backburning on Fraser Island

Backburning

Smoke may be seen in parts of Fraser Island, as the Butchulla Aboriginal Corporation works to conduct backburning near K’gari Camp.

The planned burns will take place near the camp, (adjacent to the Woralie Road on Fraser Island) beginning today until Thursday.

As a result, smoke may be seen north of Eli Creek on Fraser Island.

The aim of the burn is to reduce the volume of forest fuels, and the intensity of any bushfires, providing favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.

Visitors and residents are being reminded that smoke can decrease visibility on the roads and to observe all signage, barriers and directions from rangers - and not to enter closed areas.

Those with respiratory or other health problems should seek medical advice on mitigating the effects of smoke inhalation.
