Support for Sunshine Coast kids brings parents to tears
A back-to-school boost for families doing it tough on the Sunshine Coast.
The Buderim Foundation is handing out $32,000 worth of vouchers to support local school kids who need assistance with school expenses, like clothing, shoes and stationery.
Director Rebecca Ramsay says the record amount in 2021 is thanks to donations from the Foundation, Buderim Rotary Club and the BWMCA, all being matched dollar-for-dollar by the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal's Back to School Program.
"This year we'll help directly 640 students across Buderim Mountain State School, Chancellor, Mountain Creek (both their primary and high schools) and also kids through Sunny kids as well," Rebecca says.
She says it's always touching getting feedback from grateful chaplains, parents and grandparents.
"...who are just brought to tears that they're able to buy their children the school shoes or equipment that they need to turn up at school and not be feeling so far behind or different from someone else.
"For some of us we can take for granted what a $50 voucher will do, but for so many in our community it's a massive impact that we can't underestimate."
Rebecca says in the past 17 years, $197,950 worth of vouchers have been handed out to those in need.
"We're just under $200,000 worth of vouchers that we've distributed in that time, so it's a real credit to the organisations that get involved and the partnering that we can do within the community."
