Fire fighters have been keeping an eye on a couple of blazes in the Gympie and Cooloola Coast region.

A grass fire broke out on the Wide Bay Highway near the intersection of Blacksnake Road at Kilkivan, around 1:30pm on Tuesday.

A dozen crews were called to the scene to contain the flames.

The fire was contained but crews returned to stregthen containment lines and patrol the fire on Wednesday morning.

Meantime, a grassfire was burning in inaccessible land near the intersection of Rainbow Beach Road and Tin Can Bay Road at Wallu around the same time.

Members of the Australian Defence Force were monitoring that fire, as it was burning within Camp Kerr military grounds.

Neither blaze was threatening any property overnight.

Smoke haze was affecting the roads though, with motorists advised to slow down and drive to the conditions.

If residents are concerned their property is under threat, they are advised to call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
