Giant, laughing kookaburra lands on Sunshine Coast

Forget the Big Pineapple, a new larger-than-life sculpture has landed on the Sunshine Coast, for a short time only.

A giant, laughing kookaburra started making its way across Queensland last week, on a journey from Brisbane to North Queenslans.

Creator Dr Farvardin Daliri OAM built the artwork-on-wheels, and said it was all about spreading some cheer in the wake of the covid pandemic.

"So that we can feel good about the bird and about ourselves, laugh and let go of some of the stress and anxieties that have been created during COVID-19 tragedies and hardship," he said.

It even makes the iconic kookaburra sounds and Dr Daliri dared those who visit not to chortle along.

"Besause the Kookaburra's going to make all Queenslanders laugh, there's no doubt about that."

"The Giant Kookaburra is going to leave its mark and then we may end up having [it] as a fixture, as a permanent sculpture somewhere."

The sculpture rolled into Maroochydore on Sunday and was expected to be in Noosa, Tewanin and Cooroy on Monday, before making its way north to Gympie and Tiaro on Tuesday.
