Caloundra Cup Day Run Renamed
The Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas run on Caloundra Cup Day in June will now be known as the ‘Winx Guineas’ to recognise the first race win in the sequence of 33 by the champion Winx.
As part of Racing Queensland’s prizemoney increases for the Winter Carnival, the race will go from $140,000 to $175,000.
The Club is keen to work towards an upgrade in black type status for the race which in addition to Winx, has consistently produced quality winners including Tivaci, Crack Me Up and The Bostonian.
John Miller, CEO, Sunshine Coast Turf Club said “The Winx Guineas enables the Club to recognise the champion Winx and the connection to the Sunshine Coast Turf Club and the race where it all began. We are privileged to have the support of Winx’s owners to change the race name and have a permanent Queensland race name in her honour.”
Peter and Patty Tighe, Managing Owners of Winx commented, “The beginning of the mare’s winning streak is a race we will never forget and as it turned out was the start of the greatest winning streak of races in history. It is most fitting that this race will now be named after our champion.”
