Severe Weather Warning

A Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall has been issued for people in Southeast Coast and parts of Wide Bay and Burnett and Capricornia Forecast Districts.

Issued at 10:58 am Saturday, 22 October 2022:

HEAVY, LOCALLY INTENSE RAINFALL EXTENDING SOUTHWARDS OVER SOUTHEAST QUEENSLAND TODAY AND SUNDAY .

A low pressure system off the Capricornia coast is expected to continue to develop and move slowly south to southeast over the next 24 hours and remain just offshore from southeast Queensland by Sunday morning.

HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast to affect the Wide Bay and Burnett and Southeast Coast forecast districts. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 90 to 150 mm are likely to extend southwards today, increasing over the Southeast Coast district this evening with a peak in rainfall during Sunday morning. 24-hourly rainfall totals between 100 to 150 mm are likely with falls up to 300 mm possible, most likely about the coast and ranges.

Locally INTENSE RAINFALL which may lead to DANGEROUS AND LIFE-THREATENING FLASH FLOODING is also possible during this period with six-hourly rainfall totals up to 200 mm. The highest risk areas are about the coast and ranges. A separate Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued if very dangerous thunderstorms with intense rainfall are detected.

Rainfall in Brisbane is expected to increase tonight, with a peak in rainfall rates expected during Sunday morning.

Locations which may be affected include Gold Coast, Brisbane, Maroochydore, Gympie, Bundaberg, Ipswich, Coolangatta, Caboolture, Cleveland and Jimboomba.

Significant rainfall observations in the 24 hours period to 9am Saturday include:

Coops Corner with 291mm

Tin Can Bay with 288.2mm

Rainbow Beach with 264.2mm

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
    * Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it’s flooded, forget it.
    * Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
    * For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Saturday.
