Please don’t feed the ducks.
That’s the message on new signs at Lake Alford in Gympie, urging park goers to enjoy the birdlife in other ways.
Gympie Regional Council has erected the signage following recent wildlife deaths and disease in the area.
“Unfortunately feeding these birds has negative consequences,” says Mayor Glen Hartwig.
More food means larger populations of birdlife, which can lead to an increased risk of disease and aggressive behaviour towards humans, as well as negative impacts on the natural ecosystem.
Large concentrations can de-vegetate natural areas causing erosion and increased faecal matter on the ground and in the water, which can in turn attract unwelcome pests like mice, rats and insects.
“For many residents it’s a tradition; going out and feeding the birds with your kids. We understand that people’s hearts are in the right place, but the consequences can be dire for the birds and other wildlife in the park.
“From overcrowding, water pollution, and aggressive behaviour – to algae and vegetation blooms – feeding the birds actually throws the whole ecosystem out of balance.
“Unfortunately, with the recent wildlife deaths at the park, the decision was clear. For the good of the birds, we ask residents and visitors to the park not to feed them. There are other ways you can enjoy the park” Mayor Hartwig says.
